Photo: Lucy Scholey/APTN)Lucy ScholeyAPTN NewsThe country’s new top Mountie says racism in the ranks “will not be tolerated,” following a number of troubling comments about Indigenous people posted in two secret RCMP-only Facebook groups first reported by APTN News.RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, the first woman to permanently step into the role, has been mandated to improve the force’s beleaguered relationship with Indigenous peoples.“We need to always build better trust with all of our communities and with First Nations,” she said Monday, following her first appearance before the House of Commons public safety committee.Watch APTN Investigates: Racism in the RanksAPTN reported on a number of racist comments about Indigenous people posted in two separate closed Facebook groups for RCMP members only.In one group, shortly after Gerald Stanley’s acquittal in the shooting death of Colten Boushie, a female officer posted, “Too bad the kid died but he got what he deserved.”In the other RCMP Facebook group, which has close to 10,000 members, commenters called Indigenous people “racists,” “lazy” and “with a sense of entitlement.”“Such behaviour will not be tolerated in the RCMP and we will do our investigation into that,” said Lucki.Lucki highlighted her work to improve the relationship between Indigenous communities and police in northern Manitoba, but said there’s work to be done across the country.“Sometimes we’re not accurate. Sometimes we need to be more respectful, but I believe that we are working hard at that and I know we’re doing well in many, many communities across the country,” she said. “Sometimes when we’re not doing so well, we need to learn from that and then try to make it a more respectful and more trustworthy relationship with all communities including Indigenous.”In his mandate letter to Lucki, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says her role will be to “modernize and reform the RCMP’s culture.”“This transformation includes continuing to ensure the health and safety of RCMP employees and members are protected, including from harassment and violence in the workplace, and enhancing its role in reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples,” the letter reads.Lucki, a 31-year veteran of the RCMP, is replacing Bob Paulson, who in 2015 acknowledged that racism is an issue in the ranks.Larry Hay, the director of Intelliquest Investigations and an RCMP veteran, previously told APTN an officer could lose a day’s pay as punishment for these types of racist comments.Goodale says the RCMP takes these types of comments “very very seriously.”“I think sitting here today and hearing the commissioner say that is simply unacceptable in the standards of the RCMP is a very powerful signal. It’s a signal to the force and it’s a signal about the force that this behaviour is going to change and it needs to change. The commissioner is watching.”email@example.com
VANCOUVER – Enbridge Inc. (TSX:ENB) says it has decided not to have sheriffs seize the assets of a Vancouver-based environmental group over unpaid court costs.Karen Mahon of Stand.earth, formerly known as Forest Ethics, said sheriffs arrived at the group’s office Tuesday morning with documents that authorized them to take and sell the organization’s assets to recover money owed to Enbridge.Forest Ethics was ordered to pay Enbridge’s court fees after the environmental group lost a court case against changes to Line 9, a pipeline that runs between Ontario and Quebec.Stand.earth posted a photo of the documents online that showed the amount owing at about $14,500.The group refused to pay the court fees as a “point of principle” and did not hear from Enbridge before sheriffs arrived at the office, Mahon said.“We were shocked. We’ve had no communication from the company or anyone else that this would be happening,” she said.“In that instant, it’s quite frightening, but now that we’ve had time to take our breath, we realize that this is clearly an act of bullying and we will stand up to a bully. We refuse to be intimidated.”Enbridge spokesman Jesse Semko said in an email the Calgary-based corporation has asked the sheriffs not to seize any assets from Stand.earth and it will not be pursuing the matter further. He declined further comment, saying Enbridge does not publicly discuss legal matters.Mahon said the incident has strengthened the group’s resolve to fight pipeline projects. The court fees were awarded as part of an unsuccessful lawsuit launched by Forest Ethics against the National Energy Board and Enbridge over what it alleged was inadequate consultation around the pipeline expansion project. read more
Washington – Morocco’s Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Rachad Bouhlal, was honored yesterday as Ambassador of the Year by the National US-Arab Chamber of Commerce (NUSACC).At a luncheon amidst a gathering of dignitaries, friends, colleagues, and supporters at the Willard Hotel in Washington D.C., Ambassador Bouhlal received the Ambassador of the Year award for his outstanding advocacy and service as Morocco’s Ambassador to the United States. Before presentation of the award, the celebration featured the testimonials of a long list of friends and fans of the Ambassador. Former U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, Ed Gabriel, a close personal friend, said, “The decision made by His Majesty King Mohamed VI to select Rachad Bouhlal as the new Ambassador was a deliberate one to put someone in place who would accomplish His Majesty’s mission to make Morocco a hub for Africa,” said Ambassador Gabriel. “It is truly remarkable what [Ambassador Bouhlal] has done to carry out the King’s vision.” Ambassador Gabriel said that Ambassador Bouhlal is a “great interlocutor,” a pilot, and a world class golfer, whose success, he jokingly quipped, “is due in large part to his wife, Fatiha.” Remarking that Ambassador Bouhlal cares not only about business but about his country’s culture, he concluded, “You truly are a real Renaissance man, Rachad.” With Governor Markell of Delaware and David Hamod of NUSACC – Photo Credit NUSACCThe current US Ambassador to Morocco, Dwight Bush, who was unable to attend, sent his congratulations, saying that Ambassador Bouhlal “represents the best of the diplomatic craft,” and “the diplomatic corps needs more people like Ambassador Bouhlal.”Others also remarked upon Ambassador Bouhlal’s ability to persuade and advocate to the host government on behalf of his country, and to explain the host country to leaders back home, the two key jobs of an ambassador. Governor Jack Markell of Delaware, Deputy Secretary Ken Hyatt, Deputy Under Secretary for International Trade of the Department of Commerce, all praised Ambassador Bouhlal’s contributions to diplomacy and US-Morocco relations.Bouhlal interview – Photo Credit Elisabeth MyersThe Ambassador “knows how to get round the dysfunction in Washington by getting out of Washington and visiting the states,” said Governor Markell. Hyatt highlighted the atmosphere of “opportunity, optimism, and openness” characterizing US-Morocco business relations fostered by the Ambassador’s “skill as a persuader, advocate, and ambassador.”Three of the nine state Honorary Consuls for Morocco — Jim Falk (Texas), Marilyn Diamond (Illinois), and Nana Lampton (Kentucky) — offered their congratulations. The most important remarks came from Ambassador Bouhlal himself. Noting that the US-Morocco relationship started with trade, he said that with his economic background he understands how trade can influence politics. He said he has tried to strengthen relations “by putting trade on top.” Referencing the oft-cited fact that Morocco was the first country to recognize the independence of the US, he said, “We recognized your country ten years before you did yourself!”Bouhlal acceptance -Photo Credit Elisabeth MyersFocussing on what he has tried to accomplish, he said, “If you want to do something, you need to go elsewhere than Washington in the US. I’ve been to 25 states in three years: states are so important.” He said he is working on the next state governor trip to Morocco. Highlighting the successes with the State of Delaware, he said this is an “opportunity to show that exports to the US create jobs.” He noted the plethora of US companies that have invested in and opened offices in Morocco — Boeing, Coca Cola, GE, Ford, Chevron, and Moneygram — not because “I have persuaded them to do it, but because they can make money.”“Why do they come?,” he asked. “They come because of the political stability. Morocco has free trade agreements not just with the US, but the EU, Turkey, and Jordan. These open up more and bigger markets,” he said. “They come because of good public infrastructure. They come because they find education and training and good schools. They come to Morocco because of something very special: the public-private partnerships. Public and private stakeholders get together to define a strategy for a sector. This provides for economic stability. And finally, there is no risk of expropriation [of capital].”As to the future, the Ambassador said he would keep making his visits to the individual states. Plans for the next US-Morocco business conference are already underway, with Atlanta and Seattle in the running, or “maybe both,” he said.Bouhlal award room-Photo Credit Elisabeth MyersHe concluded his remarks with a “special word for our Moroccan-Americans living and working in the US.” Although they may be small in numbers, he said, “wherever I go, I always find one.”David Hamod, President and CEO of NUSACC, said, “For each of the past ten years, NUSACC has identified an outstanding ambassador who has contributed significantly to U.S. – Arab commercial relations. This is the first time that we have selected an ambassador from the Kingdom of Morocco, which speaks volumes about the excellent work that Ambassador Bouhlal has done. NUSACC is exceptionally pleased to honor him with this award.”NUSACC, widely regarded as the voice of American business in the Arab world, is a trade association whose core mission is to strengthen U.S.-Arab relationships through mutually beneficial trade and investment. NUSACC serves as the US point of contact for 22 Arab nations, creating strong relationships between Arab and American Embassies as a critical element of the Chamber’s efforts to promote business and investment opportunities between the United States and the Arab world. read more
Rabat- In response to terrorist threats, Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) dismantled today a terrorist cell consisting of seven pro-ISIS extremists acting between Zaouiat Cheikh, Oulad Teïma, and Marrakech. The Ministry of Interior issued a statement this morning announcing the arrest by BCIJ of seven pro-ISIS extremists aged between 22 and 32. BCIJ acts under the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance. The first investigations revealed that the suspects were actively promoting propaganda for ISIS through campaigns praising the barbaric acts of the terrorist group. According to the ministry’s statement, the suspected individuals were involved in “gathering and recruiting young people to plan terrorist attacks which undermine the security and stability of the Kingdom, at the instigation of an ISIS leader.” The arrest enabled the seizure of various electronic devices, knives, and electrical wires, in addition to written material released by ISIS and some of its branches, the statement said. The statements noted that some members of the cell were linked to the pro-ISIS terrorist cell dismantled on October 14, 2017 in Fes. This operation enabled the seizure of firearms, live ammunition, and chemicals used to manufacture explosives. The suspects apprehended this morning will be brought to justice at the conclusion of an investigation conducted by the public prosecutor is concluded, according to the statement.Since the beginning of this year, BCIJ has carried out several operations dismantling terrorist cells and arresting suspects with alleged links to ISIS. Just last Monday, BCIJ arrested four suspects with alleged ties to ISIS in Casablanca, Nador, Tangier, and Tiznit. read more

by David Friend, The Canadian Press Posted Oct 22, 2012 2:36 pm MDT TORONTO – Research In Motion (TSX:RIM) has struck an agreement to help manage security technology that will make it possible for many Canadians to pay with their smartphones through “mobile wallets.”The BlackBerry maker said Monday it has been chosen by EnStream, a company set up by Canada’s three largest wireless networks, to provide the security infrastructure that would make the substitute for debit and credit cards at checkouts work.Using a smartphone to make a payment is considered one of the next waves of wireless technology in North America, driven by the growing number of credit cards, rewards programs and identification that many people carry.Under the agreement, RIM will manage security credentials for SIM cards in BlackBerrys and devices running both Google’s Android and Windows operating systems.RIM’s Canadian managing director Andrew MacLeod said the technology will allow for seamless and secure payments at retailers for items ranging from gas stations to coffee and groceries.“We think that the Canadian market is uniquely situated to probably be one of the early adopting markets for cashless or contactless payment solutions,” MacLeod said in an interview.“We think this is the perfect opportunity for this type of technology to really get a footprint and get traction.”EnStream is a joint venture between the country’s biggest wireless carriers — BCE Inc.’s Bell (TSX:BCE), Rogers (TSX:RCI.B) and Telus (TSX:T) — specifically to manage mobile payment technology. The service covers traditional plastic card payment methods, as well as gift cards and loyalty rewards programs. The partnership ensures that when mobile phone payments rollout across the country, the three wireless carriers won’t be clashing with competing technologies that could sour consumers.Last week EnStream sold Zoompass, a retail payments processing business that relies on a different phone-to-phone technology, to the Toronto-based funds tech company Paymobile Inc. for an undisclosed amount.Aside from its mobile phone hardware business, RIM also owns technology for secure payments between consumers and retailers on mobile devices.Newer BlackBerry smartphones, including the latest models in stores, have the ability to make mobile payments as do some phones using the Android operating system. The new iPhone 5, however does not have Near Field Communication short-range wireless technology to link to credit card information.EnStream chief operating officer Almis Ledas said the company will have to wait until the next model of iPhone, likely due sometime next year, before it will be able to consider supporting encrypted payments on an Apple device.“We intend to support the global platform standard for handset connectivity and if the iPhone has a Near Field Communication capability we’ll support it — if it doesn’t, there’s not much we can do about it,” Ledas said.In the meantime, Rogers (TSX:RCI.B) and CIBC already have announced they will launch Canada’s first mobile payments system later this year, giving Canadians the ability to pay with their credit card using a smartphone.Last month, Rogers CEO Nadir Mohamed said the company is also awaiting approval from the federal Finance Department for a credit card that would be available to its 9.4 million subscribers. It made the application just over a year ago.Mohamed suggested the average Canadian carries 22 plastic cards in his wallet.RIM already has technology in its BlackBerry 7 smartphones that allows the device to double as an access badge for buildings with secure entry systems in place. The company is preparing to launch its more advanced BlackBerry 10 operating system and BlackBerry devices early next year, after numerous delays, though a specific launch date hasn’t been set. A touch screen version of the smartphone is expected to debut first, followed by a keypad variation of the device.Last week, the company sent out an invitation to some of Ottawa’s key government officials for a sneak peek at the new BlackBerry operating system. The event is designed to drum up excitement on Parliament Hill where the BlackBerry remains the dominant phone.RIM shares gained six cents to $7.75 in trading Monday morning on the Toronto Stock Exchange. AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Comcast Corp. plans to start selling movies and TV shows from its set-top box before the end of the year, according to a person familiar with the matter. The nation’s largest cable TV provider already rents movies and TV shows, but by selling content through set-top boxes, it will expand a market that remains a small fraction of home entertainment spending in the U.S.The new service could also potentially take a bite out of digital sales at Apple Inc.’s iTunes and Amazon.com Inc.’s Instant Video Store, partly because users wouldn’t need an extra device like an Apple TV box or video game console to watch their purchases on their big screen TVs.Under the plan, the 20 million subscribers of Comcast Corp.’s digital Xfinity TV service will initially be able to select from a few hundred titles that include new releases, family fare and fan favourites, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about deal with the movie studios that have not been finalized. The list is expected to expand quickly over time. After buying, users will be able to stream them limitlessly from their set-top box, or download the video to computers and mobile devices.Comcast already has the infrastructure to stream movies and TV shows on-demand over mobile devices. It also currently allows subscribers to download certain videos for consumption when outside of Wi-Fi service. The new service could offer those willing to spend $10 to $20 apiece for access to new-release films a couple of weeks before Blu-ray discs are made available for sale. Several studios like 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. regularly make new releases available for sale digitally before physical discs hit retailers.Purchases would be recorded in a digital locker that subscribers could access from a computer even if they drop TV service in the future, the person said. However, if consumers build up a digital collection, it could also offer a reason for customers to keep on subscribing for easy access.Major Hollywood studios are supportive of the plan because it offers yet another outlet for digital sales, according to two other people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the pending deals. Universal Pictures, the studio owned by Comcast, is expected to be involved at launch.According to industry group The Digital Entertainment Group, digital sales of movies and TV shows in the U.S. amounted to $764.5 million in the first nine months of the year. While that’s up 49 per cent from a year ago, it’s about half the amount people spend on video-on-demand rentals and just 6 per cent of the $12.6 billion spent on home entertainment overall. Prof Christopher Snowdon, a lifestyle expert, said: “Being fat is not a disability. If obese people are to be given special privileges, why not smokers, alcoholics and compulsive gamblers?”It comes as projections to be presented at the congress by the UK Heart Forum and Institute of Technology in Ireland show that five million Britons will be morbidly obese by 2035, the Body Mass Index of those aged over 40 doubling within 20 years. Obese workers should be allowed to start work late to avoid the rush-hour crush, a government adviser has said, and they should have the right to sue employers if they are not offered jobs or promotion because of their weight.Prof Stephan Bevan, of the Institute for Employment Studies, said businesses should make more “accommodations” for workers carrying excess weight, adding it was time those suffering “functional impairment” were supported at work in the same way those with other health conditions might.Critics called the idea “ridiculous”, with concessions for the obese likely to fuel resentment among fellow workers. But speaking at the European Congress on Obesity in Vienna, Prof Bevan said the condition should be made a “protected characteristic” under the Equality Act.“It’s the same as if you went for a job and didn’t get it because you were a woman,” he said. Peter Dupas will be retried on April 7 2010 for the murder of Mersina Halvagis, according to media reports last week. The trial is expected to last eight weeks.Mersina Halvagis was stabbed to death in 1998 while visiting her grandmother’s grave at Fawkner Cemetery. Peter Dupas, 56, had been convicted of the murder in 2007. His lawyers, however, filed an appeal on the grounds that certain identification evidence should never have been presented to the jury and additionally the judge should have instructed the jury differently on other issues. The Court of Appeals granted last month the motion for a new trial. Mr Dupas’ defence team appealed in the High Court for a permanent stay of the case due to the publicity it has received. The father of Mersina, George Halvagis who had spoken to Neos Kosmos English Edition on the day of the announcement of the Court of Appeals decision had expressed his devastation and said: “At this moment I can not express how I feel, the only thing I can say is that the system is putting us on trial and nobody else.” Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram read more

March 5, 2009 – The U.S. FDA is notifying healthcare professionals and patients that certain transdermal patches (medicated patches applied to the skin), containing aluminum or other metals in the backing of the patches, can overheat during an MRI scan and cause skin burns in the immediate area of the patch. The FDA is in the process of reviewing the labeling and composition of all medicated patches to ensure that those made with materials containing metal provide a warning about the risk of burns to patients who wear the patches during an MRI scan. Until this review is complete, FDA recommends that healthcare professionals referring patients to have an MRI scan identify those patients who are wearing a patch before the patients have the MRI scan. The healthcare professional should advise these patients about the procedures for removing and disposing of the patch before the MRI scan, and replacing the patch after the MRI scan. MRI facilities should follow published safe practice recommendations concerning patients who are wearing patches. For more information: http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/safety/2009/safety09.htm#Transdermal FacebookTwitterLinkedInPrint分享 News | March 05, 2009 MRI Burns Medicated Patches Containing Aluminum Warns FDA Technology | Contrast Media | July 15, 2019 FDA Approves Bayer’s Gadavist Contrast for Cardiac MRI in Adult Coronary Artery Disease Patients The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Gadavist injection for use in cardiac magnetic resonance… read more News | Focused Ultrasound Therapy | July 10, 2019 Insightec’s Exablate Neuro Approved With GE Signa Premier MRI in U.S. and Europe GE Healthcare and Insightec announced U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval and CE mark for Insightec’s… read more News | Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) | July 16, 2019 AAPM 2019 Features More Than 40 Presentations on ViewRay’s MRIdian MRI-guided Radiotherapy ViewRay Inc. announced that the company’s MRIdian System is the focus of more than 40 abstracts selected by the… read more Technology | Neuro Imaging | August 07, 2019 Synaptive Medical Launches Modus Plan With Automated Tractography Segmentation Synaptive Medical announced the U.S. launch and availability of Modus Plan featuring BrightMatter AutoSeg. Justin Watson-left, Bruce Buchanan-right – handshake_ web Justin Watson-left, and Bruce Buchanan Jetstar-right_ web Source = e-Travel Blackboard: N.J With Asia-Pacific travellers in sight, Jetstar and Tourism New Zealand have committed to a three year marketing agreement to target visitors from Australia, Singapore, Japan and across the Asia region.A similar agreement to that signed with Tourism Australia late last month, Jetstar and Tourism New Zealand agreed today to invest up to NZ$1.5 million per year until mid-2014 to leverage on the 100% Pure campaign as well as create joint brand, promotional and tactical campaign using social media, TV as well as print and online. Tourism New Zealand chief executive Kevin Bowler described the joint cooperation as a “significant opportunity” for New Zealand and said the two Groups will focus on building markets that are of “key priority” to the tourism industry.“In particular, Jetstar’s growing Singapore and Tokyo hubs provide greater opportunities for travellers across the region to travel to New Zealand on a low cost carrier,” Mr Bowler said.“Through this partnership we can achieve greater and deeper reach with our campaigns and it allows us to combine our skills, expertise and resources across our organisations.” Hoping to build on the 400,000 passengers Jetstar brings into New Zealand annually, as part of the deal the carrier will refer travellers on JEtstar.com to book flights to New Zealand as well as increase the country’s destination content on its site. The airline said on top of the arrangement it is expecting to introduce the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on its Singapore to Auckland services in 2013.While it is also aiming to operate direct short-haul single class A320 flights between Australia and Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown, flights to Auckland from Japan via the Gold Coast, and domestic services between Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Queenstown and Dunedin.Jetstar Group chief executive Bruce Buchanan said the investment emphasised the region’s importance to the airline and utilising its cheaper fares could “open New Zealand up to a whole new generation of travellers”.“With our Singapore hub providing connections with 25 Asian destinations, it makes New Zealand an increasingly accessible holiday destination for an emerging middle class in China, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia,” Mr Buchanan said. “The launch of Jetstar Japan next year will put New Zealand within reach of millions more holidaymakers from key cities in the world’s third-largest economy.”For the year ending September 2011, New Zealand welcomed up to 1.12 million visitors from Australia, 74,000 from Japan and 34,343 flew in from Singapore. read more
